Kia ora Koutou,
This month, in 1987, the Māori Language Act came into force making Te Reo Māori an official language of New Zealand. In 1985, the Waitangi Tribunal heard the Te Reo Māori claim. This asserted that Te Reo was a taonga (treasure), that the Government was obliged to protect under the Treaty of Waitangi. The Maori Language Commission renamed Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori in 1991, was established to promote its use. I have a lot of caregivers wanting to know more about supporting tamariki (children) or rangatahi (young people) in their care starting with the language. They are often shy or unsure of where to go to learn more without feeling uncomfortable. A nice friendly and safe place to start is Te Taura Whiri (Māori Language Commission). I have included a link for you to have look at when you’re ready.

The permanence of the language, of prestige and land. (Without the Māori language, without prestige and land, Māoritanga will cease to exist.)
