Kia ora koutou katoa,

June 2022 is a month of significance for maori this year as it is the month we acknowledge Matariki, and, we get to share this as a public holiday with all of Aotearoa.  How cool is that!  I have been doing my share of research around Matariki and you cannot go past Associate Professor Dr Rangi Mataamua.  I have included a link to a presentation Dr Mataamua did at Te Papa where he speaks about Maori astronomy and Matariki and explains the connections so beautifully.  I highly recommend you have a listen.  In this link you find more information and explanations around Matariki that would help with your learning.  https://www.tepapa.govt.nz/discover-collections/read-watch-play/maori/matariki-maori-new-year/listen-matariki-and-maori

Also this month in the mighty Waikato we have our NEW Waikato FASD Whanau and Caregiver roopu meeting face to face in Hamilton.  Yay!  This group was formed as a partnership between Caring Families Aotearoa and Oranga Tamariki Waikato.  We recognise the need for carers of children with FASD to be able to come together and share their experiences with others who “get it”.  The date for this meeting is set for Thursday 17 June.  If you would like to know more please contact me on 027 5010 395 or click on the feedback button below.  I will post any updates on the Waikato Face book group.

Trainings;  If you’ve been getting our snippets you know we have lots of opportunity for our members to be a part of our new workshops.  I can promise you we are working very hard in the background to get these out to you.  Keep an eye on our workshop calendar for the latest trainings.  And, don’t forget our Ako Ngatahi series.  If you haven’t had a chance to click in on one of these sessions follow this link to learn some more.

If you are a Grandparent raising a Grandchild in the Morrinsville Piako area and would like to attend the “What’s Behind The Behaviour” workshop on Wednesday 8 June please contact me on 0275010395 or call 0800 693 323 to register.  It’s free!

As caregivers we learn about the importance of connection with our children.  Connection with others is a nice way to get support.  I invite you to connect with myself and other caregivers through our Facebook group.  There are two in our region.

The Auckland South group https://www.facebook.com/groups/528461993852056

And the Waikato / Hauraki group  https://www.facebook.com/groups/396664400374346

If you are interested in connecting with others in your area, by way of a coffee group, then please let me know and I can help set that up with you.  Caring Families Aotearoa also have monthly online coffee groups.  These are the first Tuesday of each month and you can receive the link by visiting our website and registering.  Here is the link for this month.

Now things are moving again, I look forward to catching up with as many of you as I can.  Please invite me to your town,  I would love to come and share a cup of tea with you and hear how things are going.

Keeping PACE

Caring Families Aotearoa is so happy to be able to host our National Conference this year, yay, they are great!  It will be in Lower Hutt.  We have an exciting array of speakers joining us for this event that include Dan Hughes and Jon Baylin who will be talking about Parenting the Mistrustful Child. Joe Tucci from the Australian Childhood Foundation will be speaking along with a range of local keynote speakers and workshop presenters.  It will be great to see lots of Caregivers from all around the country there.  For more details and possible funding contributions check out our website.
