August 2024 East Coast Caregiver News
Kia ora East Coast caregivers!
I know June seems like a distant memory, but I wanted to update you on our Matariki event which was a resounding success, drawing in over 70 enthusiastic attendees! This was despite some initial concerns about rain, the weather held off, allowing everyone to enjoy the day’s festivities fully.
The craft activities organised by VOYCE Whakarongo Mai were very popular, providing a creative outlet for both children and adults. Caregivers found a cosy spot in the lounge where they could relax and connect with one another, sharing stories and experiences while their children engaged in fun, hands-on activities.
In the hall, the kids were fully immersed in making poi and creating their own cut-and-paste Marae, showcasing their creativity and enthusiasm. It was heartwarming to see their faces light up as they crafted unique pieces, and the camaraderie among the children was really special.
A highlight of the event was the T-shirt bag-making station, where participants transformed donated T-shirts into stylish and functional bags. This not only encouraged creativity but also promoted sustainability, as we found a new purpose for the donated items.
As the festivities continued, the aroma of a delicious hangi filled the air, and everyone gathered to enjoy this traditional meal together. The combination of hearty food and sweet ice cream provided the perfect ending to our celebration, leaving everyone satisfied and happy.
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated and contributed to making this event so memorable. Your enthusiasm, creativity, and support played a crucial role in bringing our Matariki celebration to life. I look forward to more gatherings in the future, where we can continue to celebrate our culture and community together!
