Kia ora,

Well… I’ve had a few disappointments lately, mostly connected to the lockdown so I thought I’d share this quote as it helps me move forward.

“Know how to reset after failure, disappointment and setbacks. You’ve got to learn how to get back up when you fall because that’s part of being brave.”

I think this is about having plans B, C, D…. and knowing there are different options. When our hearts get set on something it can be a struggle to come up with alternative thinking, but there’s always something else that can be done. I enjoy reading a good book. I love stories of other people overcoming adversity, for example, Stan Walker’s book, ‘Impossible’, is doing the rounds in our whānau at the moment. He shares examples of the boundless abilities of the human spirit to take life on with full force. Weren’t the Paralympic athletes such great examples of just that? Lisa Adams was the stand-out for me, and her sister who sacrificed time away from her babies! Aue…makes me cry!

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week

I’ve received the promotion pack from the Mental Health Foundation that suggests we “Take time to kōrero”. This happens to coincide with me helping out someone else’s teenager who is struggling with feeling pressured to kōrero when they would rather be left alone.

It all comes down to relationship, relationship, relationship. By making encouraging statements like “I’m here when you need me” and reaffirming your love for them, “I’m so glad you’re in my life”, works wonders for those difficult teenage years. I was one of those, so I know!. Keep the lines of communication open with inviting smiles and quiet, friendly tones that are less threatening to that teen brain.

Go gently whānau, these are trying times. Please reach out for support for you too. Let’s have a good ole fashioned chat over the phone! You can call me on 027 566 0294 on Monday – Wednesday in my work hours 8:30 am – 3:30 pm, or send a text to schedule an evening call when the kids are in bed.
